According to Chinese Medicine, of which Tai Chi & Qigong Exercise is a part, all illness - be it mental, emotional or physical, arises when one's energy system has become out of balance. This weakens our immune system and our ability to cope with emotional stress.
Difficulty sleeping, frequent bouts of illness, stress, anxiety fatigue or pain are common indicators that there is a problem with one's internal energy system. The practice of Tai Chi & Qigong corrects these flows of energy to promote excellent health, indeed many of our students have come to us from a doctor's recommendation to 'try tai chi', or following a course of physiotherapy. Currently the physio dept at Farnham hospital refers people to our classes when their course of physio at Farnham is complete.
Classes at Surrey and Hants Tai Chi employ a 'follow me' format with lots of repetition and explanations, so you'll never be left wondering what you're learning or why.
Clear demonstrations and lots of 'follow me' practice means you'll feel confident in what you've learnt.
We encourage the use of our 400+ video tutorials library to supplement learning between classes and facilitate practice at home. This is free of charge if you have a live booking for our Monday or Tuesday classes
The following frequently asked questions which cover about 50% of all enquiries we get:
Q. Are there classes at other venues / days / evenings for beginners?
A. All classes are listed on the website. Beginner classes are added at various times of the year, so the best way to hear when one is starting is to send an enquiry and we will keep you informed when a new class is planned.
Q. I have a medical condition / injury / have just had surgery / knee replacement etc. Will this class be OK for me?
A. We cannot comment on the suitability of the class for any particular condition you have because we are not medical professionals. Our professional Indemnity insurance forbids us to give any such 'unprofessional' advice. Your doctor's opinion should be sought prior to starting any new exercise.
Q. I will be away one week in the month, can I pay for 3 weeks / roll over the missed class / pay in cash / just when I attend?.
A. Sorry, that's a No to all . Bookings are paid by the month, online only, but you are always in control of your payments, and it's up to you whether to renew or not. If you don't want to continue learning with us. then you can leave the class by not renewing your place.
Q. I've already got some Tai Chi experience, do you offer a suitable class?
A. Yes, if you have at least a year's experience of either Yang Style, or Beijing 24 Tai Chi or Chen Taijiquan we may have a suitable improvers class. Use the contact us option and tell us when you learnt / how long for/ what style / forms you studied and if you can remember any of what you learnt.
Q What do I wear / what equipment will i need?
A. Comfortable loose fitting modest clothes are best - AVOID lycra / gym / yoga type clothing and anything with a low/ revealing neckline. Tight clingy fabrics impede the flow of the 'Qi' (energy) over the surface of the skin.
Most important are your shoes; wear non-slip flat soled shoes, or trainers with a thin sole. Shoes that allow your foot to spread to it's natural shape and which you can feel the ground through is ae best for Tai Chi. No bare feet / just socks, no skimpy sandals or flip flops / sliders please.
You don't need any equipment or mats.
Q I'm worried about catching Covid / colds / flu etc , what measures do you have in place?
A. We have a strict 'do not attend if you feel unwell' policy so please stay home if you have a temperature, cough, runny nose or feel off colour any particular week. Keep your germs at home - we don't want them, thanks :)
