If you have a stressful job or a lot going on in your life and want an hour a week to call your own, where you can learn techniques to cope with the pressure modern day living and maintain a state of calm, then this is the class you need.
The exercises we do here are called Qigong ("Chee - Gong")
Qigong could be described as a half-way house between complicated Tai Chi routines and standing Yoga-type flows, moving between a stretch and a relaxation, aided by the breath and mindful visualisations. Tuning into the body, we become aware of our tensions and stresses, and we learn to let go. Gradually installing a new habit of relaxation and calm, to defeat stress and anxiety
Qigong is a very ancient health promoting exercise system originating in China about 5000 years ago. A series of standing postures and mindful movements to boost the internal energy flow and promote wellness of body mind and spirit via specific postural alignments. Qigong is the exercise branch of Chinese medicine and is often prescribed by practitioners of Chinese Medicine (TCM) to improve the health of an individual.
Most of the class is performed standing up, but for 10 minutes the group sit on chairs for a guided meditation. The class was nicknamed 'Zen Sanctuary' by one of our group who attended a few years ago - they said coming into the class was like stepping away from the stresses of the world - with soft coloured lights , mandala wall hangings and Zen music. A space for being, restoring and renewal. In the light summer evenings we leave the blinds and windows open and have a view over the canal - a warm breeze and evening birdsong wafting in through the picture-windows of our sanctuary :)
